The Alexandria boys hockey team is trying to break out of a slump right now after falling under .500 with a fourth straight loss on Thursday.

Goals have been hard to come by in the last three losses as the Cardinals have combined for just five of them during that stretch. Alexandria (4-5-1, 4-4 CLC) beat Fergus Falls 5-4 in the season opener on Jan. 15, but the Otters (9-1, 5-1 CLC) have been on a tear since then, with the 6-2 win over Alexandria being their ninth straight.

The Cardinals got exactly the start they were looking for by grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first period behind two from junior forward Josiah Gronholz.

“Gronholz made a good rush up the ice and beat (Fergus Falls goalie Ben Swanson) on the short side,” Alexandria head coach Josh Meyers said. “About six minutes later, Gronholz put the Cardinals up by two after beating a Fergus Falls defender and making a nice breakaway move.”

An Alexandria penalty helped the Otters get back in it. Fergus Falls’ Isaac Johnson scored at even strength at 9:38 of the first period before Carter Thielke added a power-play goal before the first intermission.

That was the start of six unanswered goals for the Otters. Sterling Andrews scored less than three minutes into the second period to give his team its first lead. Johnson scored his second goal of the night, and Isaac Young added two himself to finish off the win.

Teagan Pfeffer started in goal for Alexandria and allowed four goals, while turning aside nine shots. Christopher Loken replaced him halfway through the second period and made 25 saves on 27 shots faced. Swanson got the win for Fergus Falls with 21 saves as the Otters outshot Alexandria 40-23.

Fergus Falls is atop the Central Lakes Conference with its 5-1 league mark, just in front of St. Cloud (6-2, 4-2 CLC).

Alexandria is currently fifth in the CLC and will try to bounce back on Saturday against one of its biggest Section 6A rivals when the Cardinals go to St. Cloud Cathedral (4-6) for a 4:15 p.m. drop of the puck.
