If the Alexandria Blizzard is going to compete for a West Division crown this season it’s going to have to win head-to-head games against North Iowa and Granite City.

The Blizzard got one of those wins over the weekend.

Alexandria beat North Iowa, the division leader, on Saturday night in a 4-2 game. The win salvages a split with the Bulls and Granite City after the Lumberjacks won a 4-1 game against Alexandria on Friday night.

The Blizzard trailed 1-0 on Saturday after a Cal Nauss goal at 15:51 in the first period. The second period is when Alexandria made its move as Caleb Strong, Cole Lehmann and Colin Tushie scored three unanswered within the first six minutes of the period.

Lehmann’s goal to go up 2-1 came on the power play. Andrew Revering, Nikolai Rajala, Strong and Sean Kenny all had assists in the second period.

North Iowa got one back right before the second intermission when Jayden Fox scored at 19:02, but the Blizzard got an important early goal in the third. Cole Klingbeil scored on assists from Brandon Greeder and Benjamin Tschida at 7:13 to create all the cushion Alexandria needed.

Strong’s two points led the offense against the Bulls, and Joey Greilich was strong in net. He got the win with 33 saves and just the two goals allowed, while Evan Babekuhl took the loss for North Iowa despite 32 saves.

The split over the weekend with the Lumberjacks (4-1-0, 8 points) and Bulls (5-2-0, 10 points) has Alexandria (4-2-1, 9 points) sitting in second place in the West Division.

The Blizzard has two more games next weekend. Alexandria goes to New Ulm on Oct. 30 before returning home to the Runestone Community Center to host Granite City on Oct. 31. Both games start at 7:10 p.m.
