The Alexandria Blizzard opened a two-game weekend against division rivals on Friday night by falling in a 4-1 game against Granite City at the Runestone Community Center.
Bailey Huber stood tall in net for the Lumberjacks after giving up a first-period goal to Nolan Westra at 4:48 that gave the Blizzard a 1-0 lead. Carter Rieland and Jack Taylor assisted on that goal. Huber finished with 27 saves to get the win, while Alexandria’s Bailey Rosch took the loss after 29 saves and four goals allowed.
Granite City scored four unanswered goals through the first and second periods after Westra’s early tally. Charlie Erickson, Carson Simon, Cody Dias and Troy Dahlheimer each found the back of the net, with two of those coming on the power play.
Alexandria was 0-for-9 on the power play overall, while the Lumberjacks finished 2-for-8 with a man advantage. Shots were 33-28 in favor of Granite City.
One of the top teams in the West Division will leave in the Lumberjacks (4-1-0, 8 points) and another will arrive in town. Alexandria (3-2-1, 7 points) welcomes in division-leading North Iowa (5-1-0, 10 points) on Saturday night at 7:10 for the final game of the weekend.
