The Northstar Knights hockey team picked up a couple more wins this past weekend when the Knights returned home and beat the Des Moines AAA Buccaneers in 4-3 and 7-3 games.
Sunday’s game saw Northstar jump out to a 3-0 lead behind a goal from Talon Sigurdson and two from Alexandria native Jakob Stender.
Des Moines got one back, but Jens Richards scored on the power play to make it 4-1. The Buccaneers couldn’t slow down the Knights’ offensive attack as Jacob Napier, Alexandria’s Truett Olson and Richards all scored down the stretch. Brody Lucas also tallied three assists, and Richards added two helpers to give him a four-point game.
Chris Brown got the win in net with 16 saves on the 19 shots he faced.
Saturday’s game got off to a slower start, but the Knights found a way to finish. Napier opened the scoring for Northstar in the second period, and Richards made it 2-0 just two minutes later. Des Moines answered with 3:34 left in the middle frame before Ben Strinden gave the Knights a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Northstar made that lead hold up. Des Moines scored late in the third to make it a 3-2 game, but Brody Lucas got an empty-netter with 44 seconds left to push the lead back to two. That proved to be the game-winner when Des Moines scored eight seconds later to make for the 4-3 final.
Sigurdson had a couple assists in the game, and Lucas and Napier both added helpers. Camdyn Barber got the win in net with 18 saves on the 21 shots he faced.
The Knights are back home in Alexandria at the Northstar Sports Complex this weekend. The Thunder Bay Kings are in town for three games, with Friday and Saturday night games starting at 7 and Sunday’s game beginning at noon.
