The Alexandria boys hockey team saw a 3-0 lead disappear on Monday night only to add to the dramatics of the third period in a 4-3 win at Fergus Falls.

The Cardinals got the game-winner from senior forward Caleb Strong late in the final period. It was Strong’s second goal of the game after also starting the scoring at 6:09 of the first period.

That was part of a fast start for Alexandria as Matthew Carlsen scored at 11:27 off Strong and Josiah Gronholz assists on the power play to grab an early 2-0 lead.

It was 3-0 after a Joe Westlund goal almost nine minutes into the second period, but the Otters rallied. They rattled off three quick goals, with two coming from Cole Zierden around a Logen Schake goal. That all happened within a three-minute span.

The Cardinals withstood that momentum shift and settled back down in the third. Landyn James stopped every shot sent at him in the final frame, including three near the finish after the Otters pulled goalie Ben Swanson to get the man advantage.

James made 22 saves to get the win. Swanson took the loss despite 31 saves.

Alexandria has another big game tonight, Tuesday, when Little Falls comes to the Runestone Community Center for a 7:15 p.m. Section 6A match-up.
