The Alexandria boys hockey team responded to its loss to St. Cloud Cathedral on Monday night by taking care of River Lakes in a 4-0 contest a day later.
The Cardinals (13-6, 8-1 Central Lakes Conference) outshot the Stars (10-8-1, 4-4 CLC) 29-12, including 13-2 in the final period. That’s when Alexandria put the game away with goals from Caleb Strong and Josiah Gronholz within the first five minutes of the period.
It was the second goal of the night for Gronholz. He got things going for the Cardinals at 13:26 in the second period off assists from Strong and Matthew Carlsen. Gronholz made it a three-point night when he assisted on Joe Westlund’s goal less than 30 seconds later. Both of those second-period scores came on the power play.
Landyn James got the shutout in net with 12 saves. It was the Cardinals’ second win over River Lakes in a span of less than a week after also beating the Stars 2-1 on Jan. 23.
