The Willmar girls hockey team ended a five-year drought against Alexandria on Thursday night as Willmar defended its home ice in a 3-2 win.

Willmar is in the midst of one of its best seasons in recent years at 14-6-1. They lost 6-2 to Alexandria (12-6-3) on Dec. 5, but scored two third-period goals on Thursday to split the season series.

It was a scoreless game through one period before Mayson Toft gave Alexandria a 1-0 lead off assists from Lauren Maras and Anna Doherty at 5:18 of the second. Mya Monson tied it late in the period when she scored with the help of an assist from Ashley Larson.

Hanley Block gave Alexandria another lead at 2-1 2:34 into the third, but Willmar responded. Larson scored on the power play at 6:20 and Bailey Olson got the game-winner at 9:09 off of Monson’s second assist and third point of the night.

Jordan O’Kane started in net for Alexandria and stopped 22 of 25 shots. Bryton Carlson was big for Willmar with 35 saves in getting the win.
