The Alexandria Blizzard hosted the West-Division leading North Iowa Bulls in its lone game of the weekend on Saturday night and fell by a 5-2 final.
The Bulls (27-4-2, 56 points) outshot Alexandria (14-12-2-1, 31 points) 53-32 and scored in every period.
Lucas Wahlin got them going late in the first period, but it was a 1-1 game after the Blizzard’s Nolan Westra scored at 4:36 of the second. Justin Daly made it 2-1 North Iowa three minutes later, but the Blizzard answered again with a Derek Dropik goal at 15:54.
The Bulls got the final goal of the middle frame with a little more than a minute left in the period from Nick Bowlin. Daly and Matt Dahlseide then scored the only goals of the third period to secure the win for the Bulls.
Jack Taylor, Cole Lehmann, Mathias Branton and Ike Taraszewski all had assists for Alexandria. Ville Hyttinen took the loss in net despite 48 saves. Joseph Daninger got the win with 30 saves.
The Blizzard will head into a home-and-home series against Rochester next weekend. Alexandria goes to Rochester on Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. before hosting the Grizzlies on Jan. 18 at 7:10 p.m. Rochester is the top team in the Central Division right now with 51 points and a 25-6-1 record.
