Girls hockey: Cardinals seeded second as they try for a seventh straight trip to state
The Alexandria girls hockey team now knows the path it needs to take if it is going to secure a seventh straight entrance into the state tournament.
The Cardinals (13-12) were seeded second in the Section 6A Tournament. Alexandria will open the playoffs against seventh-seeded Morris-Benson Area (3-19) on Thursday night at 7 at the Runestone Community Center.
Fergus Falls (18-6) earned the bye during the first round of the seven-team tournament after getting the first seed in the bracket. The Otters will play the winner of fourth-seeded River Lakes (10-13-1) and fifth-seeded Prairie Centre (12-12) in the semifinals.
The winner of Alexandria versus Morris-Benson Area will play the winner of third-seeded Willmar (11-10) and sixth-seeded Northern Lakes (9-13-2) at the high seed in the semifinals. Those games are scheduled for Feb. 12 at 7 p.m.
The Cardinals and the Storm have not played each other this season. Morris-Benson Area has lost nine straight coming into the tournament and has allowed an average of 6.9 goals per game to opponents this season.
Alexandria enters the playoffs having won six of its last seven and eight of the last 10 contests. The Cardinals are averaging five goals per night during those last 10 games.
The Section 6A championship game is scheduled to be played on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. in Willmar.
