It was quite a contrast between game one and game two for the Alexandria boys hockey team.
Two nights after a tight 2-1 win at Little Falls, the Cardinals blew out Willmar on Thursday in an 8-0 road win that puts this team at 2-0 on the young season.
Alexandria outshot the rival Cardinals 49-8 and led 2-0 after the first on goals from Caleb Strong on the power play and Joe Westlund. Alexandria put things away with three goals in each of the second and third periods.
Scoring was spread out throughout the lineup as Strong led the way by finishing with the hat trick. It was part of a four-point night for the junior after adding an assist. Ben Doherty added four points (2 goals, 2 assists), while Evan Lattimer and Josiah Gronholz joined Joe Westlund with single goals. Jack Westlund assisted on three goals, while Alex Jost and Andrew Revering each added a helper.
Junior Landyn James got his first varsity start and secured the shutout. His night was highlighted by a save on a Willmar breakaway in the first period. His defense made sure he wasn’t pressured much as James finished with the eight saves.
Alexandria will take its unblemished record to Mankato West now on Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Cardinals play the 0-2 Scarlets. Alexandria welcomes in Sauk Rapids-Rice for its first home game at the Runestone Community Center on Dec. 4 at 7:15 p.m.
