The Alexandria boys hockey team got its season off on the right foot on Tuesday night as the Cardinals erased an early deficit to beat Little Falls, 2-1.
George Moore made it a 1-0 advantage for the Flyers at 12:31 in the first as he scored off assists from Mason Dempsey and Gabe Hirsch. That’s how things went into the first intermission before Alexandria struck in the second.
The Cardinals had outshot the Flyers 12-4 in that opening frame, and senior Ben Jenson finally blew the cover off the lid when he scored at 7:40 in the second. Joseph Bigger and Joe Westlund assisted on the goal to help tie things at one apiece.
Through two frames, Alexandria had outshot Little Falls 26-9. It took just 32 seconds into the third for the Cardinals to connect on the game-winner from the first line. Senior Ben Doherty got the goal as Jack Westlund and Caleb Strong helped him out with assists.
Senior goaltender Bailey Rosch and his defense took it from there. Rosch had 15 saves for the win as the Cardinals’ blue line helped to limit chances, with Alexandria outshooting the Flyers 34-16 overall. Dane Couture took a tough-luck loss for the Flyers despite 32 saves and just the two goals allowed.
It was the start of a busy opening week for Alexandria. The Cardinals now go to Willmar on Thursday night at 7:15 before heading to Mankato West at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Their first home game is Dec. 4 at 7:15 p.m. against Sauk Rapids-Rice.
