Hockey: Blizzard splits first two playoff games against Mason City

Alexandria hosts game three on Sunday at 6:10 p.m., and the winner moves on to the next round of the playoffs.

The Alexandria Blizzard defended home ice in game one of the NA3HL Western Division semifinals with a 3-2 win over the No. 3 seed Mason City on Friday, but Mason City won 3-1 on Saturday to set up a winner take all game three back in Alexandria on Sunday.

Alexandria’s offense was consistent in Friday’s win, as it scored a goal in each period.

Jack Whitemore, Sean Kenny, and Joe Gronholz scored for the Blizzard.

The Blizzard, the No. 2 seed in the western division, had a 40-26 shot on goal edge in the win.

Konrad Kausch earned the win in net for the Blizzard with 24 saves.

In Saturday’s game down in Iowa, Mason City scored twice in the first frame, but Alexandria cut its deficit to one goal early in the third period with a goal by Hayden DeMars. But a goal Cullen Hogan goal midway through the third period sealed Mason City’s 3-2 win.

Alexandria lost despite having a 42-22 shot on goal edge.

The winner of Sunday’s game faces either the No. 4 seed, the Willmar WarHawks, or the No. 1 seed, the Granite City Lumberjacks, in the NA3HL Western Division finals.

Puck drop between Alexandria and Mason City on Sunday at the Runestone Community Center at 6:10 p.m.
