Hockey: Blizzard split road games at Mason City

Alexandria scores five goals in a win on Friday over Mason City, but fall in an overtime shootout on Saturday.

The Alexandria Blizzard (4-1-1) won one game and lost one on the road against the Mason City Toros (5-5), with a 5-2 win on Friday and a 5-4 shootout loss on Saturday.

In Friday’s game, Mahtomedi native Cole Klingbeil and Prior Lake native Ryan Hadland scored late first-period goals to put the Blizzard up 2-0.

A goal by Roseville native Gavin Carlson put the Blizzard up 3-0 midway through the second period.

The Toros scored a late second-period goal and an early third-period goal to cut its deficit to one, but Hadland and Klingbeil each scored a goal to put the game away for the Blizzard.

Josiah Gronholz (two), Sean Kenny, Ethan Moerke (two), Justin Wasvick, Jayden Luck and Matt Scribner had assists for the Blizzard in the 5-2 win on Friday.

Cloquet native, Kyle Abrahamson recorded the win in net for the Blizzard with 24 saves. Alexandria had a 36-26 shots on goal advantage on Friday.

The first period of Saturday’s game saw a lot of scoring as Mason City scored twice and Alexandria scored three times. Klingbeil scored twice and Hadland scored once.

After Mason City scored a goal to tie the game at three, the Blizzard scored their third power play goal of the night to move ahead 4-3. Hadland scored the goal in the second period.

Mason City scored early in the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

On the third shot in the shootout, Marcus Fritel scored a goal to give Mason City the 5-4 win and the extra point in the standings.

Kenny (twice), Moerke, Wasvick, Caleb Moore, Karsten Senden and Charlie Larsen had assists in Saturday’s game.

The Blizzard begin a three-game homestand on Wednesday against the Minnesota Loons (4-8) at 7:10 p.m. The Blizzard then host the Toros on Friday and Saturday, both at 7:10 p.m.
