Hockey: Blizzard split a pair of road games

Alexandria sits at 7-3-1 following a loss to the Willmar WarHawks and a win over the Minnesota Loons

The Alexandria Blizzard hit the road this past weekend and fell to the Willmar WarHawks, 5-2, on Friday, Nov. 4 but bounced back with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Loons on Saturday, Nov. 5.

Willmar jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Alexandria with a goal late in the first period in Friday's game and two early in the second.

Alexandria first got on the board with a goal by Ryan Hadland (assist by Wyatt Johnson) with 3:09 left in the second frame.

The WarHawks (3-9) scored a couple of power-play goals in the third period and went on to win 5-2. Alexandria’s Ethan Moerke scored the final goal of the contest (assist by Cole Klingbeil and Bazl Cook).

Willmar had a 36-27 shot-on-goal advantage in the game.

In Saturday’s game, Alexandria jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Loons with a goal by Charlie Larsen in the first frame (assist by Josiah Gronholz and Hadland), a goal by Gronholz in the second (Moerke assist) and a power-play goal by Karsten Senden.

The Loons (6-11) cut into the Blizzard’s lead with a goal at halfway point of the second frame, but a goal by Logan Lukasezck with 2:25 was the final goal of the game and the Blizzard (7-3-1) won 4-1.

The Blizzard had a 38-27 shot-on-goal advantage in the win. Alex Lamont earned the win in net for the Blizzard with 26 saves.

Alexandria is on the road once against on Nov. 11 as it takes on the New Ulm Steel (4-9-3) at 7:10 p.m. Alexandria then Breezy Point, to take on the Loons once more at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Alexandria and New Ulm have not played each other yet this season.
