Hockey: Blizzard advance to Fraser Cup Championship Tournament semifinals

The Blizzard went 2-0 in pool play and have advanced to the NA3HL Fraser Cup Championship Tournament semifinals.

The Alexandria Blizzard built on its win over the Texas Brahmas on Thursday to open the 2023 NA3HL Fraser Cup Championship Tournament in St. Peters, Missouri, by beating the Granite City Lumberjacks on Thursday, 3-1.

Alexandria has now won pool A and plays the second-place team from pool B in the semifinals at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Alexandria will play the Oregon Tradesmen, Helena Bighorns, or Northeast Generals in the semifinals.

In Thursday’s game, the Blizzard broke a scoreless tie with goals by Joe Gronholz and Justin Kingery in the second period.

The Lumberjacks scored once in the first four minutes of the third period to bring it back to a one-goal game, but an insurance goal by Ryan Hadland a minute later sealed the Blizzard’s win.

Alexandria had a 32-26 shot on goal edge in the win. Konrad Kausch earned the win in net for the Blizzard and made 25 saves.

The winner of Saturday’s semifinals game plays in the championship game on Sunday at 3 p.m.
