Hockey: Alexandria girls U8 team relishes experience at Wisconsin-Minnesota game
The Alexandria girls U8 hockey team recently had the chance to partake in a handful of festivities at a Minnesota-Wisconsin women's college hockey game and met up with Alexandria alum Mayson Toft (who plays for Wisconsin) for autographs and photos afterward.
The Alexandria Area Hockey Association (AAHA) recently sent its girls U8 team to take in a unique experience at a women’s college hockey game between the Wisconsin Badgers and the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.
At the game, the girls had the opportunity to meet Minnesota’s mascot, Goldy, and to play hockey on the ice during an intermission.
AAHA says the opportunity was set up by a Mite Coordinator, Andrew Olson, who reached out to the Minnesota program, and both parties were able to agree on a date for this event to happen.
AAHA has had opportunities in the past for the boys teams to go to Minnesota Wild games and wants to create opportunities for girls to take in big experiences at big games, as they did on Feb. 11, 2023.
Wisconsin won the game 7-5.
After the game, the team had the chance to meet up with an Alexandria alum and current Wisconsin Badger, Mayson Toft, for photos and autographs.
“It was awesome to see my community and the girls that were just like me when I was younger come and watch me play,” Toft said.
Toft is a Lowry native who is a junior for the Badgers.
Toft said that she could feel and see the team’s presence there.
“I could hear them when we came out of the tunnel for game time,” Toft said. “They were all in the corner wearing their jerseys, and they were just super excited to be there. That was super cool. I was excited to have my community come and watch me out there.”
AAHA has the Big Ole Jamboree coming up starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday through the afternoon on Sunday.
A full schedule of the Jamboree can be found on the AAHA website.
