Girls golf: Cardinals pull away from the field at pre-sections

Hannah Boraas

The Alexandria girls golf team is rolling right now after a busy end to the week saw the Cardinals win a Saturday meet in Staples after winning pre-sections the day before at the Rich Spring Golf Course.

Alexandria shot a 355 in Staples to edge Bemidji by five strokes in the 13-team field. Hannah Boraas was the medalist with a 79 (40, 39), while Cora Larson tied for ninth with an 89 (42, 47). Lauren Rebrovich shot a 93 (t-14th, 48, 45) and Aisling O’Connor finished off the lineup with a 94 (48, 46).

Strong winds on Saturday made for some high scores across the board, but Alexandria had no such problems at the presection meet on Friday. All of the Section 8AAA teams were there, and the Cardinals ran away with the meet by shooting a 316. Bemidji was a distant second at 339, and Sartell-St. Stephen was third at 349.

“This was a very fine performance, and should give us confidence moving forward,” head coach Tim Zupfer said. “We will get another chance to play this course, for a CLC meet on May 20th.  We tied our season best, with seven total birdies for our team. It is nice to see the things we are working on in practice pay off.”

Once again, it was Boraas leading the way. She tied for first with a 76 after nines of 37 and 39. Larson shot a season-best 78 (39, 39) to finish third, while Ciara O’Connor (43, 38) and Rebrovich (39, 42) tied for fourth with 81s. Aisling O’Connor had an 86 (43, 43) to tie for 10th, and Isabella Hagen finished off the lineup with a 106 (54, 52).
