Lakers fall to Rockford

The Rockford Rockets (2-0) got the best of the Minnewaska football team on Friday night. The Lakers fell to 0-2 on the season after losing 20-6 on their home turf.

Rocket’s quarterback Sam Zilmer threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Wes Overton early in the second quarter to take a 6-0 lead. Connor Schreckenghaust followed it up with a four-yard touchdown run before he punched in the two-point conversion.

Minnewaska made it a one-score game when Darion Alexander completed a touchdown pass to Peyton Johnsrud for 21 yards. However, Schreckenghaust’s second touchdown run of the game in the fourth quarter put the game on ice.

Zilmer finished with seven completions for 108 yards. Alexander was 12-for-27 for 136 yards and a touchdown. Tyson Meyer had 17 carries for 65 yards on the night.

Despite forcing four turnovers, Minnewaska had a hard time establishing anything on offense. The Lakers had a total of 242 yards but were 6-for-15 on third downs. Minnewaska was also 0-for-4 on fourth downs. Aaron Ver Steeg picked off two passes on defense.
