The Minnewaska Area football team’s season came to an end on Saturday afternoon after a 48-0 loss to Pierz.
The Pioneers are 10-0 and the second-seeded team in Section 6AAA. Staying unbeaten wasn’t an issue as they scored 42 points in the first half.
Matthias Algarin scored three touchdowns, including a 68-yard punt return late in the second quarter. Michael Liedenfrost picked off Grant Jensen on Minnewaska's third offensive play of the game and returned it for six points. He also ran for a touchdown early in the second quarter.
The Lakers were held to 114 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times. Jensen completed one pass for two yards. Tyson Meyer led Minnewaska in rushing with 43 yards on 12 carries.
The Lakers finished their first season in Section 6AAA with a 7-3 record overall and a second-round playoff exit. Pierz is headed to the section title game on Friday night at St. Cloud State University against top-ranked Albany. Both teams are 10-0 this season and are ranked in the top-four in the state, according to Minnesota-Scores.
