The West Central Area-Ashby football team had piled up the points in rolling over Thief River Falls and Wadena-Deer Creek through the first two weeks.

Perhaps hidden in that was the fact that the defense also posted back-to-back shutouts. This past Friday, the Knights (3-0) used that defense in a much closer game to win at Crookston by a 14-6 final. The Pirates (0-3) got on the board first when Leyton Salentine broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run.

The Knights answered to tie it at 6-6 going into the half when Jaden Norby scored on a 6-yard run. The game-winner came in the fourth quarter when Norby punched in his second touchdown of the night, this time from a yard out. He added the 2-point conversion to finish off the win.

WCA-Ashby had just 209 yards of total offense, but the Knights held Crookston to 188 yards. Norby was 6-of-10 passing for 85 yards and a couple interceptions, but he led the ground game with 83 yards and the two scores on 19 carries.

Braden Overson led the defense with six solo tackles, including one for a loss, while also adding an interception. Connor Nadgwick and Gage Staples both added interceptions, as well.

The Knights will now turn their attention to a big Section 6AA game on Friday night at home when Pillager comes to town. The Huskies are 2-1 and averaging 36.3 points per game, while holding opponents to 16.3. Kickoff in Barrett is set for 7 p.m.
