The Minnewaska football team suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of the Mainstreeters in Sauk Centre on Friday night.
The Streeters were the first team to get on the board when quarterback Casey Schimmers made a connection with Cade Neubert for a 42-yard touchdown. Schimmers made a successful pass to Dylan Haskamp who ran the last five yards for the two point conversion.
Schimmers made another connection, this time with Royal Weber, who scored from the 22 yard line for the second touchdown of the game. The two point conversion was no good.
The Lakers (4-2) soon responded with their own two touchdowns. First, quarterback Matt Gruber carried the ball from the 31 yard line for a touchdown and Drew Nelson made a successful kick for the extra point.
Then, Ryan Christianson made a 45 yard run into the end zone. Grant Jensen kicked and scored the extra point for the Lakers, making the score 14-14 in the first quarter.
The Streeters were the only team on the board in the second quarter. Schimmers threw a pass completion to Brady Carlson who made the 17 yard run in. The two point conversion was missed, making the score 20-14 at the half.
The Lakers were the first on the board in the second half when Gruber scored off of an eight yard run and Jensen kicked the extra point.
Sauk Centre tipped the scales in their favor with a connection between Schimmers and Weber for a 48 yard touchdown. Haskamp made it in for the two point conversion, which proved instrumental in the outcome.
The Lakers got their touchdown in the fourth quarter from a Gruber pass to Jaeger Jergenson on a 13-yard connection. Jensen attempted to kick for the extra point to tie it but was blocked, making the final score 28-27 in favor of Sauk Centre.
The Lakers had 19 first downs compared to Sauk Centre's 14. The Streeters fumbled and lost the ball four times, but they had 493 total yards on offense. The Lakers had 388 yards on offense.
The Lakers are 4-2 now and host Osakis (2-4) on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
