Football: Lakers own Tigers, win 35-7

The Minnewaska football team recovered from its loss last week to BOLD and added another win to their season record when they hosted Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta on Friday night.

The Minnewaska football team recovered from its loss last week to BOLD and added another win to their season record when they hosted Morris Area-Chokio-Alberta on Friday night.

The Lakers completely shut the Tigers out of the first quarter. Matt Gruber was the only player to get on the board with a 40 yard run into the end zone for the Lakers. The extra point was missed, making the score at the half 6-0.

The Lakers opened the third quarter with a handoff from Gruber to Garrett Jensen who made an eight yard run for the score. Jensen punched it in again for the two-point conversion.

The Tigers only touchdown came in the third quarter when Connor Koebernick handed off the ball at the four yard line and Nathan Beyer ran it in. Eli Grove made the kick for the extra point.

Minnewaska responded with a successful connection between Gruber and Jaeger Jergenson who found the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown. Drew Nelson kicked for the extra point, making the score 21-7 going into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers owned the fourth quarter with two more touchdowns, making the final score 35-7.

Gruber had a nine yard run for the touchdown and Nelson got the extra point. The last Lakers' touchdown came from Tyson Meyer who made a 46 yard run. Nelson kicked for the extra point.

The Lakers' offense had a total of 386 yards compared to the Tigers with 170 yards. Morris fumbled and lost the ball three times.

Gruber made six complete passes out of 14 attempts for 39 yards. He also rushed for 117 yards. Ryan Christianson gained 103 rushing yards.

Morris Area fell to 2-3 with the loss. The win improves the Lakers record to 4-1 as the team heads into Friday's game in Sauk Centre (3-2) at 7 p.m.
