Five WCA youth in Hawkeye National

Five youth wrestlers from the West Central Area Little Knight program in Barrett traveled down to Waterloo, Iowa for the Hawkeye National Tournament the weekend of December 6.

Five youth wrestlers from the West Central Area Little Knight program in Barrett traveled down to Waterloo, Iowa for the Hawkeye National Tournament the weekend of December 6.

Second grader Hunter Gruchow ended up finishing in second place at the tournament. He went 4-1 on the day and was pinned in his only loss after he was unable to roll through a headlock, ending up on his back.
Owen Gruchow, a kindergartner, wrestled in the 55-pound pre-kindergarten and kindergarten division and also took second place. Owen lost 8-4 in the first round of the tournament before winning his next four matches in the losers’ bracket, including one in overtime.
Anthony Sykora’s trip to Iowa resulted in a third place finish in the third and fourth grade 85 pound division. Sykora received a bye and pinned his second round opponent before losing by tech fall to a top-ranked wrestler.
Sykora defeated his next opponent 6-0 to advance to the third place match where he won 7-2.
First grader Colbe Tappe went 3-2 and took fourth place at the tournament in the 54-pound first and second grade division.
Four-year-old Cooper Tappe wrestled in the pre-kindergarten 40 pound division and finished 0-2. Tappe still has two more years of eligibility in the pre-kindergarten division.
The tournament was the first in a series of three tournaments that will also take place in Minnesota with the Gopher State Nationals and Wisconsin with the Badger Land Nationals. Wrestlers who finish in the top six are awarded a championship belt for their efforts.
