Alexandria 8-year-old Dillon Larson was fishing on Lake Le Homme Dieu on the afternoon of June 23, hoping to catch a few panfish.

Casting in about five feet of water, Dillon hooked into a small perch on his Wingding Jig and started reeling it up. That's when a bowfin, commonly referred to as a dogfish, latched on to the perch and did not let go until they landed both fish.

"This was Dillon's first ever bowfin and first time he has ever had a large fish eat on a smaller fish while he was reeling up his line," Dillon's dad, Nate, said. "This made for an exciting afternoon out on the water."

The bowfin's information page on the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources website states that the fish has been around since the time of the dinosaurs. They are known to be able to survive out of water for a considerable amount of time.

"A farmer once found a live bowfin in moist soil when he ploughed a field that had been flooded a few weeks before," the DNR page states.
