The Alexandria boys basketball team leaned on its defense to get another conference and section win on Monday night.
The Cardinals (13-1, 11-1 Central Lakes Conference) swept the season series with Sauk Rapids-Rice (8-5, 5-5 CLC) by going to Sauk Rapids on Monday and returning with a 53-43 win. It’s the second straight game Alexandria has held an opponent in the 40s after opponents averaged 74.7 points-per game during a 2-1 stretch for the Cardinals from Feb. 16-23.
“The kids have done a nice job defensively,” Alexandria head coach Forrest Witt said. “We had a stretch where we got a little complacent, but the kids have refocused and done a nice job playing with more urgency and purpose from possession to possession on the defensive end.”
Guards Kristen Hoskins and Colton Roderick both had 15 points to lead the offense against the Storm. Erik Hedstrom added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double.
Alexandria returns home for two more CLC games this week. The Cardinals welcome in Rocori (5-8) on Thursday night at 7:15 before Sartell-St. Stephen (7-7) comes to town for a 1 p.m. tip on Saturday.
