Listeners to the KXRA Radio station have known a constant voice for Alexandria Cardinal athletics over the last 48 years. Now they will have to get to know a new voice on game nights.

Dave Harris announced his decision to retire from the radio station as the sports director and broadcaster at the end of the year. Harris has worked part time for KXRA for 48 years where he was a constant at Alexandria games, both in town and following teams around the state. His last day on the job is December 31.

“It was not an easy decision, but one I am comfortable making,” Harris said in an email announcing his decision on Monday. “[I] am looking forward to a new beginning.”

Dave McClurg will take over for Harris covering sports at KXRA on January 1, 2015. McClurg has worked as the sports director at KMGK Radio in Glenwood for a little more than eight years.

Earlier in his career, McClurg worked in Alexandria at KSTQ-Lakes 99.3, the predecessor to Z99, from July, 1993 through February, 2000. KSTQ was sold to Paradis Broadcasting in early 2000, which resulted in him relocating to Ada.

“It is an honor to be succeeding Dave,” McClurg said of Harris. “He is an icon in the area and will definitely be missed. Having previously covered Alexandria Cardinal sports for a time, it’s like a homecoming for me, and I’m looking forward to maintaining KXRA’s excellent coverage of Cardinal activities.”

Harris has been around Alexandria athletics and had a passion for following the Cardinals since 1966. He has served as the sports editor for the Park Region Echo, now the Echo Press, and also on KXRA as the color man, play-by-play voice and as the Cardinal sports director.

“It’s always been about the kids,” Harris said. “It has been about giving all those young men and women their ‘15 minutes of fame’ on the air, letting their parents, brothers, sisters and relatives, as well as those in the community that follow Cardinal athletics, know what a great bunch of kids we have in our school system.”

Look for more on Harris and his nearly five decades on the job in an Echo Press article near the end of the month.

Open house for Harris

Dave Harris will be honored for his nearly five decades of covering Alexandria sports with a community open house hosted by the KXRA radio station and District 206 on December 17.

The event will run from 4-6 p.m. in the commons area at the Alexandria Area High School. Everyone is invited. Harris’ last day at KXRA will be December 31 of this year.
