It was a busy afternoon for Douglas County area cross country programs on Monday as Ashby-Brandon-Evansville, Osakis, Parkers Prairie and West Central Area all competed at the Long Prairie Golf Club.
The Knights came out victorious in both the boys and girls varsity races. Alex Salwasser (16:48) won for the boys, and Lexi Bright (20:33) won the girls’ 5K.
Kade Runge (17:31.1) and Roman Mihalovski (17:51.2) were third and fifth overall, respectively. Shad Swanson (8th, 18:17.9), Eli Bergman (19th, 18:49.2), Tyler Biss (44th, 20:20.5) and Noah Olson (45th, 20:22.1) finished off the Knights’ varsity lineup for the boys.
“Roman looked fresh and strong,” WCA head coach Austin Hanson said. “One of two athletes after Friday's extremely hard workout to increase their time from last Wednesday in Minnewaska. Most of the kids had really sore legs, but they managed to impress us with their resiliency once again. The schedule was changed due to the expected rain, so runners were a bit thrown off. They love routine and often when they don't get it we have issues.”
The A-B-E boys were next in line among area teams as they finished sixth in the 14-team standings with 168 points. Senior Jayden Hoidahl was 18th individually to pace the team in 18:46.4. Micah Fossel (30th, 19:37.6), Wesley Siira (32nd, 19:48.1), Logan Froemming (40th, 20:00.8), Kian Gackle (48th, 20:26), Abram Fossel (56th, 20:58.6) and Donell Lee (76th, 22:34.2) ran varsity for A-B-E.
Freshman Zackery Bruder led Osakis in 12th place with a time of 18:41 as a Silverstreaks team with no seniors in the lineup finished eighth as a group.
Jacob Taplin was 23rd individually in 19:09.1. Kale Drevlow (29th, 19:33.8), Brennen Gustafson (66th, 21:29.7), Joseph Aaser (78th, 22:40), Marcus Wolf (79th, 23:00.6) and Issac Ruegemer (80th, 23:28.8) rounded out the Silverstreaks’ lineup.
Parkers Prairie junior James Suchy showcased himself as one of the top runners in the area with a sixth-place finish in 17:55.6. The Panthers were 12th as a team as Isaac Grabow (75th, 22:13), Andrew Sansness (82nd, 23:37.5), Ross Kortenbush (83rd, 23:40.8), Evan Washburn (89th, 24:21.5) and John O’Brien (93rd, 25:10.7) finished the lineup.

The West Central Area girls scored 54 points, well in front of second and third-place finishers Holdingford and St. John’s Prep with 90.
Senior Lexi Bright finished 11 seconds faster than second-place finisher Olivia Pauly, a sophomore from St. John’s Prep. The Knights’ Terina Blascyk, a sophomore, added an 8th-place finish overall in 22:11.6.
Seventh-grader Kyra Beyer was 12th (23:12.4), sophomore Alexa Blume was 15th (23:32.5) and senior Victoria Junker was 18th (23:38.7) to finish the team scoring for WCA. Senior Kennedy Porter (20th, 23:41) and freshman Blaire Reuter (34th, 24:58.2) were not far behind.
Osakis, A-B-E and Parkers Prairie all had too few varsity runners to qualify for a team score. Freshman Stephy Marthaler jumped up to the 5K course as Osakis’ lone runner on varsity and finished 80th in 31:28.8.
