The course was sloppy for the 40 teams running in the Milaca Mega Meet on Saturday’s rainy morning.
Trudging through the water and the mud, the West Central Area boy’s cross country team took first place. Not only did they win, they held off the second place team by 20 points.
Jacob Bright led the pack with his time of 16:47. Jack Van Kempen and Kade Runge took ninth and 10th. Alex Salwasser (21st) and Kyle Schill (28th) contributed to the Knight's team score. Reubens and Shad Swanson took 73rd and 105th place.
“With so many racers, it’s hard to get a handle on how the team is doing,” head coach John Van Kempen said. “We’ve had some struggles with illnesses so we really needed everyone to run well today. We needed that experience of competing in a large field of runners because it’s similar to our section meet near the end of October.”
The girls also had an impressive meet by taking fifth place.
Lexi Bright finished in 14th place to lead the Knights. Teagan Nelson took 23rd in the 230-runner field. Brynn Fernholz (41st), Taylor Bennett (67th), Alexa Blume (75th) and Brooklyn Runge (169th) had strong races in the Knight’s fifth-place finish.
“The girls team is improving and we will need a solid few weeks of practice prior to our conference and section meets,” Van Kempen said.
