The West Central Area cross country teams went to Breckenridge for their second meet of the season on Thursday and came back with a first-place finish from the boys and a fourth-place finish out of the girls in the 14-team field.
Jacob Bright set the tone with a win in the boys race for the second time this season. Jack Van Kempen was third, Kyle Schill fifth, Kade Runge sixth and Alex Salwasser was ninth as all five WCA runners finished in under 17:30. That led the Knights to 24 team points as they held off Fargo North with 36 points.
“Jacob, Jack, Kyle and Kade ran together for the first half of the race and then Jacob appeared to have been shot out of a cannon at that point and left the competition behind,” head coach John Van Kempen said. “Alex, our usual fifth runner, had to do some maneuvering to catch up to the pack to finish in ninth for us. Jacob and Jack are excellent leaders and their teammates feel accountable to them.”
Reubens Swanson was WCA’s sixth runner in 27th place overall and Shad Swanson was 36th.
“We wanted several other to get a chance at a 5K so we also threw Dane Anderson (40th), Bryce Kjesbo (41st), Roman Mihailovschi (54th), Jack Courrier (56th), Peyton Hanson (61st), Tyler Biss ( 64th), Eli Bergman (71st) and Camden Anderson (74th) into the race,” coach Van Kempen said. “This was the first 5K for many of them and they also competed well in that length of race.”
The WCA girls were led by Teagan Nelson in 10th place overall. Brynn Fernholz was 23rd, Taylor Bennet was 24th, Terina Blascyk 34th, Alexa Blume 47th, Brooklyn Runge 63rd and Kennedy Porter came in 64th.
“Teagan ran alone for much of the race but we expect to have Brynn and the injured Lexi Bright (who won the JV race again) to be running with Teagan as the season progresses,” coach Van Kempen said. “We really like where we are right now as we know once we are full strength we will be much faster.”
