The Brandon-Evansville baseball team has a lot of experienced players who were expected back this spring from a 16-8 team last season.

That had the Chargers excited about getting back on the field before the spring sports season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The strengths of this team include strong leadership from our large senior class, as well as pitching depth and above average team speed,” B-E head coach Brian Perleberg said. “This team is very experienced with 10 returning letter winners and some very promising young players.”

Marshall Riedel (P/SS) and Jesse Perleberg (CF/P) were both All-Section 6A and All-Pheasant Conference players from a year ago who are now seniors who would be looked upon to lead the Chargers. Tanner Bitzan (3B/P) and Zack Haugen (P/2B) are two more seniors who were honorable-mention all-conference players, while Sam Fuller (OF/1B), Keagan Schiele (LF), Corbin Olson (SS/2B), Seth Stelzer (OF), Andrew Perrin (OF) and Tony Schaffran (1B/P) complete the list of 10 seniors for B-E.

Border West won the Pheasant Conference in 2019 after going 12-0 in league play and 17-4 overall. Ashby was 8-4 and in second place, while the Chargers went 7-5 in the league.

“I feel the Pheasant Conference will once again be balanced with Ashby, Hancock and Border West all being some of the preseason favorites to compete for a conference championship,” Perleberg said.

(Editor’s note: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minnesota State High School League spring activities season is suspended through at least May 4. Whether a season will be played at all is very much up in the air, but these spring preview stories are meant to give coaches for area teams an opportunity to share what they think their players might be capable of if any type of season is played this year.)
