Charger girls' basketball team advances to 6A-South finals

The Brandon-Evansville girls' basketball team went on a late run in the first half to build a cushion and never looked back from there in a 53-37 win over Underwood in the Section 6A Tournament on Saturday.

The win for the Chargers and a Parkers Prairie upset over second seeded Hancock set up a match up of the top two teams in the Little Eight Conference for the south subsection title last night, Tuesday.

Brandon-Evansville and Underwood were locked in a close game for much of the first half before a five-point run gave the Chargers some breathing room. Nikki Olson hit a three to put her team up by seven and Katie Boesl followed with a steal and a lay-up to give her team the momentum heading into the half.

"I thought we were kind of sputtering there and that was a big three and a big two to give us a little more cushion," head coach Dick Simpson said.

The Rockets added two before the first half ended, but the lead had been pushed to seven at the break. From there, the Chargers never looked back on their way to a double-digit victory.

Eight players scored for Brandon-Evansville. Jenna Meissner and Megan Strese each poured in 14 points to lead the Chargers' attack.

Ellen Ferry led Underwood with 16 points, but the Brandon-Evansville defensive effort held Aann Bjorklund to just four, all coming in the first half.

"We played pretty good defense in the second half," Simpson said. "Holding Bjorklund to no points in the second half was definitely a key."
