Card wrestling: State tournament preview

Three Cardinal senior wrestlers will cap their high school careers with state tournament appearances today as they take part in the State Class AAA individual tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Three Cardinal senior wrestlers will cap their high school careers with state tournament appearances today as they take part in the State Class AAA individual tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Cole Ellison, Andy Bouressa and Dillon Schauff open tourney action at 1 p.m.

Ellison (25-10) will be taking on Steven Keogh, a senior from Apple Valley who is 30-1 and the top ranked wrestler in Class AAA, in his opening round. Keogh is the defending Class AAA champion.

If he should win, he would face Richard Carlson (24-2) of Mounds View (ranked No. 8) or Justin Duruji (17-8) of Owatonna in round two.

Two other medalists are in the field: Cory Hanson of Albert Lea, who was fourth at 135 pounds, and Kyle Begin of Anoka, who was fifth at 152 pounds.

Bouressa (22-8) opens against Chandler Arrendondo of Bloomington Jefferson/Bloomington Kennedy, a sophomore who sports a 23-6 record.

Should Bouressa win, he would face either Shaun Little of St. Michael-Albertville (36-2 and ranked No. 2) or Connor Kortan of Albert Lea (34-8 and ranked No. 7), in the quarterfinals.

Two medalists are at this weight: Matt Hechsel of Apple Valley, fifth, and Coyte Kuefner of Owatonna, who was sixth at 215 pounds.

Schauff (20-10) opens action against Lakeville South senior Zane Peterson (37-1), the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Class AAA at his weight class. Peterson was fifth last year.

Should he win, Schauff will face Corbin Farrell (27-12) of Apple Valley or Kris Orloske (14-7) of White Bear Lake.

Zack Vine of Centennial is the only other returning medalist. He was sixth at heavyweight last year.

Class AAA action begins at 1 p.m., with the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. and wrestlebacks at 8 p.m.

Action continues tomorrow, Saturday, with the consolation quarterfinals at 10 a.m., the individual semifinals at 11:15 a.m. and the consolation semifinals at 1:15 p.m.

The third and fifth place round will open at 5 p.m. with the championship round at 7:30 p.m.
