The Cardinals put three wrestlers into the finals of the Litchfield Invitational Saturday, emerging with one champion as Ross Carlson dominated the field at heavyweight and led Alexandria to a seventh place team finish.

Cardinals Trent Piepenburg at 103 pounds and Andy Bouressa at 189 pounds, both finished second.

"We wrestled well during the day," said head coach Tom Ellison. "This is a very strong tournament as every team entered had wrestlers that are ranked in the state."

Carlson, ranked No. 9 in Class AAA, picked up a pair of first period pins en route to the championship match, where he defeated Joe Gomez of Totino-Grace 4-0. Gomez is ranked No. 9 at 215 pounds in Class AA.

Piepenburg, a freshman, earned a pair of quick wins in his weight class to reach the finals, then lost a close 5-0 match to Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's Tyler Berghuis.

Bouressa also lost to state-ranked Ryan Larson of ACGC in a close 6-4 battle as the Falcon wrestler scored a takedown as time expired to pick up the win.

Alexandria senior Cole Ellison earned a third place finish at 160 pounds, losing in the semifinals to No. 2 ranked Kyle Begin of Anoka.

The Cardinals had Anthony Hubbard finish fifth at 140 pounds, while Dylan Kriese, Tristan Johnson and Ricky Vance were all sixth.

"Our wrestlers continue to battle each and every match," said Ellison. "They are improving with each match."

Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, ranked No. 5 in the Class A polls, captured the team title with 282 points.

Totino-Grace, which finished eighth, is among the Lean and Mean squads named by The Guilllotine, Minnesota's wrestling magazine.
