Alexandria held its own in the first half of the Cardinal boys' basketball season opener Friday, trailing the Moorhead Spuds 35-33 in non-conference action, but couldn't keep up the pressure in the second half, falling 71-61.

"Some careless offensive plays and defensive breakdowns allowed the Spuds to make a run of their own and gain a two-point advantage going into the half," said Cardinal head coach Forrest Witt. "Alexandria sputtered within various stretches throughout the second half, allowing the Spuds to maintain its tempo throughout the half."

Aaron Lien and Matt Fernholz were the mainstays for Moorhead, dropping in 24 and 19 points, respectively, to keep the Spuds in the driver's seat.

Alexandria got 12 points from Parker Giroux and 11 from Dan Gorghuber in the game.

"The boys played with great energy and effort, but we need to improve in several areas of play," Witt said.
