The Cardinal boys' basketball team dropped its second straight game to start the season on Tuesday when Detroit Lakes came in and handed Alexandria a 60-54 loss on its home court.
The Cardinals tried to set the tone with their defense early. They did that, holding Detroit Lakes to just 23 points in the opening half. Unfortunately for Alexandria, it could not convert on its own end of the court as the Cardinals trailed by two at the break.
Both teams went back-and-forth in the final 18 minutes. The two teams exchanged leads before the Lakers secured the win with free throws down the stretch.
The Cardinals will have plenty of practice time to get things turned around before their next game. They have a week before welcoming Little Falls to town next Tuesday. The Flyers were 1-0 after a 68-65 victory over Pierz on Tuesday night.
