The Brandon-Evansville softball team is 4-1 on the season after splitting a doubleheader at Wheaton-Herman-Norcross (1-3) on Tuesday night.

The Chargers fell behind 7-2 after one inning in game one but rallied for a 9-8 win before dropping the nightcap in a 6-4 final.

Five errors in the first game almost came back to bite the Chargers, but they put up a run in the top of the seventh to break an 8-8 tie and held the Warriors scoreless in the bottom of the frame.

Mikenna Pattrin got the pitching win by throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run on six hits and five walks. She struck out seven and added two runs and two RBIs at the plate.
“We dug ourselves an early hole, but were able to clean things up in the field and stay aggressive on the bases to come back and take this first game,” B-E head coach Kasi Sieling said. “Our batters did a nice job of hitting the ball hard and taking advantage of miscues on the bases to bring girls in. Mikenna threw well and the defense was able to work out of situations and come away with the win in the opener of conference play.”

Five more errors hurt B-E in the second game as the Warriors used a five-run third inning to erase what was a 3-0 Chargers’ lead after one. Bailey Schaefer allowed just one earned run on six hits and four walks in five innings from the rubber.

“It is difficult to win games when we give teams extra outs in innings,” Sieling said. “Bailey threw a solid game, but we just weren’t able to make the plays behind her. Offensively, our bats were about as cold as the temperatures and we struggled to really find our groove and get anything going. Wheaton was a tough team and hit the ball hard in both games to really put the pressure on us.”
