The Alexandria boys soccer team fell to 2-1 against a good St. Cloud Cathedral team in a 4-2 loss on Tuesday.
Alexandria battled back to tie things in the second half but couldn’t hold off the Crusaders in the end. Cathedral took its first lead in the ninth minute with a goal and went into the half with a 1-0 advantage.
“The Cards seemed flat that first 40 minutes, spending most of their time playing defense,” head coach Cahil Collins said.
“The boys picked it up in the second half, generating some opportunities. Even so, Cathedral scored in the 50th minute to go ahead 2-0.”
Kagan Foster got Alexandria on the board nine minutes later off a corner kick from Dan Murphy. The Cardinals tied it five minutes later as Zach Johnson scored off a direct free kick from Murphy.
“At this point the boys were playing very well, holding their own against a fine Cathedral team,” Collins said. “In the 66th and 76th minutes, Cathedral scored some beautiful goals to go ahead 4-2. The boys stepped up and played a fine second half to make it an excellent soccer game.”
Alexandria had six shots on net, while the Crusaders had 18. Zach Harstad took his first varsity loss after starting 2-0 with a couple shutouts. He had 14 saves.
