Each boys and girls high school hockey program in Minnesota selects a winner for the Hobey Baker Award from its season. Following the 2019-20 season, senior captain Matthew Carlsen took home the honor for the Alexandria boys.
Carlsen scored six goals and had six assists in 24 games this season as one of the Cardinals’ top defensemen, but his approach to the game is what won him the Hobey Baker honor. He demonstrated character, commitment, teamwork, perseverance, selflessness, academic excellence and sportsmanship.
The Hobey Baker Foundation promotes the concept, “The team before me,” and has presented this award to the player on each high school team that most exemplifies the values and traits of Hobey Baker.
Carlsen is a three-sport athlete, and will play baseball at Bethel University next spring.
