Senior Bailey Schaefer has needed to step up with the Brandon-Evansville girls basketball team dealing with some injuries in February, and Schaefer has done that in recent games.

She hit a single-game Brandon-Evansville record seven threes on her way to 29 points in a 50-39 loss to Underwood (9-2, 7-1 Little Eight Conference) on Feb. 18. On Monday, Schaefer went a different route and shot 9-of-16 from two on her way to a game-high 31 points in a 54-53 win for the Chargers (5-6, 5-4 LEC) over Battle Lake (5-7, 5-3 LEC). She also tormented Battle Lake defensively with eight steals to go with six rebounds, two assists and a block.

“Another excellent performance from Bailey tonight,” B-E head coach Zach Traphagen said. “Also was very happy with Olivia Otto's defense and the work Kiley Lund and Korrie Randt did on both ends of the court.”

The Battlers held a 23-21 advantage at the break, and it was close through the final 18 minutes. The Chargers’ offense got going more in the second half on the way to 33 points. It was just enough on a night when B-E shot 34% overall.

“The girls persevered and stayed with it,” Traphagen said. “We made just enough plays in the end to hold on to the lead and then Kaytlyn Pattrin sank a huge free throw to make it 54-50 with six seconds left. It is a really good feeling to play as hard as we did and get rewarded with a win.”

It sends the Chargers into a week off between games before two good teams come to Brandon next week. Brandon-Evansville hosts Hancock (12-0) on March 1 and West Central Area (7-4) on March 4, with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
