The Osakis girls basketball team lost a close game against Maple Lake a year ago by a 54-50 final, and the Irish (3-1) edged the Silverstreaks (2-1) again in a close game on Monday.

Osakis made two free throws to go up three with nine seconds left. That’s when Maple Lake went the length of the court and got a three with 1.8 seconds to go from Bryn Elsenpeter.

The Irish forced a turnover on the ensuing inbounds. With 0.4 second left, Maple Lake converted an inbounds play from in front of their bench on a lob to Elsenpeter in the lane that she put up and in for the game-winner. Elsenpeter finished with a game-high 17 points.

“We played well enough to win the game, but in games like this, every possession offensively and defensively is important, whether it's at the beginning or end of the game,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “The teachable moments that came out of this game will be valuable for us as our season moves forward.”

The Silverstreaks trailed by two at the break after leading early. Osakis bounced back from some offensive struggles late in the half to retake the lead after halftime.

“I thought in the second half, we came out with a ton of energy and took the lead back,” Kalpin said. “We were able to get into a nice offensive flow moving the ball well and taking good shots. Defensively, the girls worked really hard and rebounded well.”

The Silverstreaks shot 40% from the field (18-44), while Maple Lake hit on 46% of its shots (20-43).

Junior Lexi Klimek gave Osakis a spark with a team-high 10 points to go with four rebounds. She was almost perfect from the field, going 4-of-5 and knocking down 2-of-3 free throws.

“Lexi came in the second half and provided the team a much-needed spark, scoring a team high 10 points, all in the second half," Kalpin said.
