The Alexandria boys basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak on Monday night as the Cardinals took care of Little Falls in a 73-63 final.
The win against the 9-15 Flyers was another Section 8AAA victory for Alexandria (17-8). The Cardinals are now 7-4 against 8AAA opponents this winter, with the playoffs right around the corner.
“We played well in stretches of the game,” Alexandria head coach Forrest Witt said. “We weren't real tough on the glass, and we had a few slow rotations defensively, but credit Little Falls. They were sharp and their shooter got hot. Our kids responded with a great run around the 6-minute mark that solidified the win.”
Alexandria has just one game left in the regular season with Sauk Rapids-Rice (9-15) coming to town on Friday night at 7:15.
The Cardinals are still positioned as a potential third seed in the section, according to the latest QRF rankings through Minnesota-scores.net. St. Cloud Apollo (18-7) and Bemidji (17-6) are currently the top two seeds in the field.
Sartell-St. Stephen (15-9) is ranked behind Alexandria as the fourth seed as of Feb. 25, but the Sabres have two head-to-head wins over the Cardinals if that third seed were to come down to a tiebreaker scenario. The QRF will seed the section officially on Feb. 29.
“This is an exciting time of the season with sections around the corner,” Witt said. “We have positioned ourselves pretty well. We just need to continue to fine tune some things, enjoy the process, and remain focused on the next opponent. Keep our focus on the short-term, but understand the opportunities available in the longer-term.”
