The Osakis girls basketball team fell in a close game against Maple Lake on Monday night to jumpstart a three-game week for the Silverstreaks.
The Irish (8-13) overcame a three-point deficit at the half by shooting 50% overall in the game on the way to a 54-50 win. Osakis sophomore guard Alexis Johanson had all 20 of her points in the first half as she led the Silverstreaks (10-12) to that fast start.
“The second half, they did a nice job of limiting her shots, which opened up more for the other girls,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “It came down to us having to make a defensive stop late in the game, which we didn't. They took the lead by one point, but we still had two possessions to take the lead back, but missed the shots. I was happy with execution on getting the shots, and that's all I can ask.”
Maddie Johanson and Mara VanNyhuis joined Alexis Johanson in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Bryn Elsenpeter led Maple Lake with 12 points, and Augusta DeMarais added 10 on a night when six Irish players scored at least six points.
“It's good to see the girls creating opportunities, which is a huge improvement this season,” Kalpin said. “With four games left in the regular season, we just need to continue to strive for excellence. We have the right effort for sure to do that."
The Silverstreaks will welcome in Benson (13-9) tonight, Tuesday, for a 7:30 tip before Browerville-Eagle Valley (8-12) comes to Osakis on Thursday night at the same time with the Prairie Conference championship on the line. Both the Silverstreaks and Tigers are currently 6-1 in conference play.
