The Osakis girls basketball team ran into a tough test in its season opener on Tuesday night at Holdingford.

The Huskers beat the Silverstreaks in a 53-33 game a year ago to open the season, and they were equally as impressive this year, beating Osakis 74-39.

“This was a tough game for the girls,” Osakis head coach Pat Kalpin said. “Holdingford was a much more aggressive team on the defensive end. They forced us into some difficult spots, which we weren’t able to recover from. The girls worked hard and attempted to do the things we asked of them. We simply will need to get stronger with the basketball. The good thing is, the season is early and we will continue to push them to get better and improve.”

Holdingford built a 47-16 lead by halftime. The Huskers held the Silverstreaks to 33.3% shooting overall and forced 39 turnovers. Holdingford countered by hitting 45.8% of its shots that included a 29-of-57 night from inside the arch.

Osakis did put three players in double figures. Alexis Johanson had 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Maddie Johanson had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Mara VanNyhuis added 10 points.

Grace Gerads and Kendra Gerads led the Huskers with 22 and 21 points, respectively.

“Despite the outcome, I thought we had many positive plays,” Kalpin said. “The girls played well on the half court defensive end and worked really hard. I was happy with our rebounding and blocking out. Offensively, we did find some rhythm at times. Alexis Johanson hit some big shots versus pressure and handled the ball for us. The key moving forward will be working together offensively to get everyone in better positions to attack and be aggressive.”

The Silverstreaks will try to bounce back when they host Royalton for the home opener at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3.
