Girls basketball: Osakis falls in tight game with Upsala
The Osakis girls basketball team had chances to snap a six-game losing streak on Thursday night but fell short in a 43-37 loss at Upsala.
The Cardinals (8-7) shot just 26.3 percent from the field and just 5-of-26 from three. But that was three more makes from the arc than Osakis, which shot 30.2 percent overall.
“This was a tough loss for the girls tonight,” head coach Pat Kalpin said. “They had many opportunities to win the game. It came down shots not falling again. They are putting themselves in great position to score and put the ball in the hoop, they are just not falling for them. They have to keep positive and keep working on the shots they are taking in games to get more comfortable with them.”
The Silverstreaks (2-12) put two players in double figures as Alexis Johanson had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Tianna Stanek added 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Madisen Johanson had a big game defensively with seven blocks.
Osakis is giving itself a chance in recent games with its defense. The Silverstreaks have held each of their last four opponents to less than 50 points.
“Defensively, we are playing pretty well, but we need to learn to make key stops in tight games like this one when the shots on the offensive end aren't falling,” Kalpin said.
The schedule won’t get much easier next week. Osakis welcomes in a 13-0 Parkers Prairie team on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before Pierz (7-7) comes to Osakis on Jan. 24 at the same time. The Silverstreaks then wrap up a three-game week by going to Benson (4-10) on Jan. 25.
