Boys basketball: Cardinals fall in tight battle at Brainerd

The Alexandria boys basketball team dropped another close game on Thursday night, falling in a 78-72 contest at Brainerd.

The Cardinals (6-5) led by one at the half, 38-37, but the Warriors (5-5) put up 41 second-half points on their way to a 78-72 win.

Brainerd junior guard Connor Powers led his team with 22 points. Joey Sauer added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Eric Martin had 13 and Mason Malone made it four Warriors in double figures with 10 points to help snap a three-game winning streak for Alexandria.

Treyton Thompson had a big game with 25 points for the Cardinals. Trey Hoepner added 14 and Carrson Jones finished with 12 points.

Alexandria will continue this long stretch of road games with another Central Lakes Conference contest at Willmar on Tuesday night at 7:30. The Cardinals return home on Jan. 18 for a game against St. Cloud Tech at 7:15 p.m.
