Boys basketball: Fellow Prairie contender, Royalton, no match for Osakis

Brandon Boogaard

The Osakis boys basketball team flexed its muscle against another winning team in the Prairie Conference on Thursday night as the Silverstreaks improved to 10-0 with a 62-38 win over Royalton.

The Royals came into the night with a 7-3 record but had no answer for Osakis over the long run. The Silverstreaks jumped out to a 33-17 lead by the break, shot 46 percent from the field (22-of-47) and used their defense to stymie Royalton much of the night.

“We had a seesaw battle the first half, but we did a nice job of finding our posts against their zone for easy shots,” Osakis head coach Matt Hoelscher said. “Our guards did a nice job making defenders commit, leaving open players by the rim. We had trouble stopping them in our press as we didn't turn them over as much as we hoped. We rotated poorly, giving them too good of looks, but we cleaned that up the second half and did a better job of keeping ourselves between them and the basket.”

Senior forward Brandon Boogaard was an efficient 8-of-9 from the field on his way to a team-high 21 points to go with seven rebounds. Junior guard Daniel Savageau added 13 points, Luke Imdieke had nine points, four assists and five steals, and Johnny Lara had a team-high 12 rebounds.

“Johnny did a great job rebounding the ball and Brandon played great help defense and taking it to the rim,” Hoelscher said. “Great win against one of the better teams in our conference.”

The Silverstreaks will now go to the Target Center in Minneapolis to play a game against Minnewaska (7-2) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
