It took an extra inning, but the Brandon-Evansville baseball team pulled off a comeback effort with Dezmond White’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth on Friday night.
After trailing 3-0, the Chargers stormed back with a five-run fifth inning en route to beating Ottertail Central 7-6. Kyle Schaffran, Tyler Bitzan, Xavier Grussing and White all had RBI singles in the fifth inning.
Bitzan was on the mound for B-E and lasted four innings. He gave up three runs in the top of the fourth inning but allowed just two hits in his outing.
“Tonight, we had our backs to the wall a couple of times, and I’m glad to see we were able to step up and find a way to compete,” B-E head coach Brian Perleberg said. “Being down 3-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning was one of the times we needed our offense to find a spark. Riley Perleberg’s leadoff double ignited the rally. It just seemed like everyone started hitting the ball better.”
OTC responded to B-E’s big inning with three runs of its own in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6.
“OTC didn’t roll over,” Perleberg said. “They were patient and poised in making a big rally in the top of the seventh. They had a chance to take the lead. I thought our kids stepped up when they needed to defensively and allowed us to extend the game into extra innings.”
