After a shortened regular season, members of the Resorters Baseball League will start their postseason tournament this weekend.

First-round matchups are single elimination in the Region 16C bracket. After the three play-in games are finished this Saturday, the remainder of the tournament is double elimination. The final two teams left standing will advance to the state tournament.

After a 5-1 regular season, the Osakis Hawks are the top seed from the Resorters. They will play the winner of the Dent Wildcats and the Kensington Norsemen on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Carlos.

The only team to beat Osakis in the regular season was Urbank-Parkers Prairie. The Bombers will go head-to-head against the Long Prairie Predators on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Carlos for the opportunity to play the Fergus Falls Hurricanes on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Urbank.

Sauk Centre, the second seed in the Resorters, earned a bye and will face the winner of the Pelican Rapids Lakers and the Carlos Cougars. There is one game already locked in for the second round. The Frazee-Vergas Loons will take on the Alexandria Black Sox on Sunday at 5 p.m. in Urbank.

As the top seed, the Hawks have been clicking on the mound and at the plate. Coming off of a 12-1 win over the Black Sox in eight innings on Saturday, they’re looking to grab one of the two spots in the state tournament available.

“It’s the same song and dance for us every year,” Osakis player-manager Doug Zimmel said after Saturday’s game. “We tear it up in the regular season but can’t perform when it counts. We are deeper this year than we have been, so that’ll help. But we just have to play smart baseball.”

A rematch with Alexandria looms if the Black Sox and Hawks take care of business in their first game. While the first go-around against the league’s top team didn’t go as planned, Alexandria player-manager Mitch Thompson is confident in his pitching staff.

“We have a lot of younger guys with Carter (Stockert) and Matthew (Carlsen), but they’re good arms,” Thompson said on Saturday. “We (had) a lot of games this weekend to close out the season, so it’s a chance for us to try some things out and get ready for a fun tournament.”

The region tournament is scheduled to wrap up over three weekends, with semifinal and loser's bracket games being played Aug. 8-9. The championship is set for Aug. 15.
