The Minnewaska baseball team is hoping for some portion of a 2020 season this spring to showcase what the Lakers believe will be a good team on the diamond.

The Lakers had much success through football, basketball and wrestling seasons so far this school year, and the baseball team figures to be a continuation of that if they get on the field. Exactly how the spring season will play out or if there will be a season at all is still up in the air due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minnewaska went 14-5 last spring, and the Lakers return seven players who played major roles in that success.

“Overall, if we can stay healthy and continue to develop as a team, we should be fighting for a spot at the top of the always-tough West Central Conference and Section 3AA,” Minnewaska head coach Brian Gruber said. “Top teams in the conference this year should be ACGC, BOLD, Morris and Melrose. Top Section teams will be Paynesville, Morris, ACGC and Montevideo from the area. The South half of our section has perennial contenders in Pipestone, Luverne, Jackson County Central and Redwood Valley.”

Jared Freese and Luke Barkeim will anchor the pitching staff as seniors who each pitched 30-plus innings last year. Combined, they accounted for half of the Lakers’ 14 wins. Gruber said junior Darion Alexander also has the makings of being a shutdown arm on the mound.

“These three players also add a lot of punch to the offensive lineup, as they are established hitters,” Gruber said. “Joining this group will be fellow seniors Dylan Jergenson (RHP/IF), Parker Holtberg (IF), Grant Jensen (LHP/IF), Clay Blair (C/OF), Mason Blair (LHP/OF), and Caden Pnitzke (OF). Leading the rest of the junior class will be Aaron Versteeg (RHP/IF/OF), Sam Hested (RHP/IF), Mitchell Gruber (RHP/IF/OF), Jace Lindemann (OF/IF), and Riley Johnson (IF/OF). There are many other talented juniors and sophomores that will be fighting for varsity time as well.”
