Baseball: Osakis wraps up Prairie title with win over 11-5 Royals
The Osakis baseball team wrapped up a third straight Prairie Conference title on Thursday night by beating Royalton in a 7-2 game at home.
The Silverstreaks (12-2, 9-0 Prairie) left no doubt from the get-go, scoring two in the first and three more in the third to take command.
“The guys executed everything they were asked to do,” Osakis head coach Shad Schmidt said. “It was a big win, obviously for winning the conference, but also big for section seeding against a good section opponent.”
The Royals are 11-5 this season and average 7.4 runs per game, but Carter Rost quieted their bats through six innings of work. He struck out seven and did not allow an earned run on five hits and three walks.
The three-run third inning for Osakis was highlighted by a two-run squeeze bunt off the bat of Luke Imdieke with Rost stealing home. Hunter Infanger was stealing third on the play and never hesitated rounding the bag as he went home on the throw to first. Schmidt called that play the turning point of the game.
“It was great execution from Imdieke, Rost and Infanger,” he said. “Coach (Bill) Infanger handled the pitching staff once again with calling a great game. What I am most proud of is how the guys made adjustments tonight after our first time through the lineup. We made some suggestions and they listened. We had a gameplan coming in and the boys followed it.”
The Silverstreaks are now home at 3:30 p.m. today, Friday, when Pierz comes to town for another Section 6AA game. The Pioneers are 14-1, with their only loss coming in an 8-7 game against St. Cloud Cathedral (13-3) on April 26.
